Educator and author Dr. Tamara Cohn Eskenazi will join Temple B’nai Torah as a scholar in residence this June. Dr. Eskenazi is Professor of Bible at Hebrew Union College in Los Angeles, the training institution for Reform rabbis and educators, where she was the first woman appointed as professor to the rabbinical faculty. She is also editor of the recently launched Women of Reform Judaism’s Commentary on Torah.
The commentary has been widely praised by leaders in the reform movement because of its focus on a more egalitarian interpretation. The commentary, which was in planning stages for seven years, is intended to augment the centuries-old biblical teachings, according to an article from the Religious News Service.
The Jewish Telegraphic Agency notes that the commentary is “the first ‘classical’ women’s commentary, according to Eskenazi, meaning that it will cover individual Torah portions in their entirety.”
Dr. Eskenazi will spend Shavuot and a Shabbat at B’nai Torah in Bellevue, from June 5–7. The public is invited to join Dr. Eskenazi and the B’nai Torah congregation for her visit. A schedule of her residency will appear in the next editio
