Digital imagery for genealogy
The Jewish Genealogical Society of Washington State will offer a workshop on how to digitize and organize old photographs and other genealogical records. Guest speaker Sally Mizroch will provide examples from her own work with her family’s genealogy. Free for JGSWS members, $5 for non-members. Mon., Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Stroum JCC, 3801 E Mercer Way, Mercer Island.

Knead some spirituality
Rochie Farkash teaches challah baking for women. She will also share recipes for Shabbat favorites like savory chicken soup, chopped liver, and apple kugel. The baking lesson will be accompanied by a talk on the significance of the mitzvah of challah. Cost is $10. Thurs., Dec. 4 at 6:30 p.m., at the home of Rochie Farkash. Mikvah matters
A two-part series for men and women interested in learning more about the role of the mikvah in a marital relationship. These classes are for adults only. Dec. 11 and 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Eastside Torah Center, 1837 156th Ave. NE # 303, Bellevue.

“Religions as promoters of human rights and peace?”

In a world where religion is often associated with images of war, violence and terrorism, this event provides a different lens — one of peace, human rights, and justice. Three religious scholars, one Jewish, one Muslim and one Christian, explain the ways in which religions and associated texts may be used to promote peace and human rights. Presented by the University of Washington’s Jewish Studies Program. Free and open to the public. Thurs., Dec. 4 at 6:30 p.m. at 220 Kane Hall, University of Washington.

“The 21st century Jewish woman: A balancing act?”
An evening dedicated to exploring feminine voices of biblical, Talmudic, prophetic, medieval and modern women. This evening provides a forum for women to connect and participate in two learning sessions led by local female educators. Cost is $20 and includes dinner. To RSVP, call 206-232-8555. Western region director of American Friends of Magen David Adom Ellen Rofman will give a talk on the work of Magen David Adom, Israel’s government-mandated ambulance and emergency medical service. Homeless shelter volunteers needed
The Temple De Hirsch Sinai Women’s Shelter hosts 10 homeless women Mondays through Fridays, 9 p.m. to the following morning at 6:45 a.m. from September to May. Volunteers are needed each night the shelter is open to stay with the women as well as to serve evening snacks and breakfast. AJC fundraiser gala
The Seattle chapter of the American Jewish Committee will honor philanthropist and community leader Deborah Rosen at its annual fundraiser gala on Wed., Dec. 3. Along with her work for the Seattle Public Library Foundation board, the University of Washington Medical School Board of Visitors, and the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle’s Foundation board, Rosen was also responsible for setting up a $150,000 educational endowment fund with AJC Seattle.
