Ten steps to the inner you
The Chabad Jewish Center of Snohomish County will host an 11-week course on the mystical view of human nature entitled “Ten Steps to the Inner You.” This tour of the inner self, based on concepts that have been utilized by Kabbalists for thousands of years, will guide participants through the 10 building blocks of their character, including the layers of the mind, inner emotions and outer relationships. Although the class is geared toward adults, teens are welcome at their parents’ discretion. There is no cost and no reservation is necessary. Energy solution
Robert Zubrin, president of Pioneer Astronautics, will present his proposal for a new direction in U.S. energy policy that would reduce the country’s reliance on OPEC. Zubrin worked for many years as a senior engineer for Lockheed Martin and is the author of a number of nonfiction books, including The Case for Mars, Entering Space and Mars on Earth. This event will take place on Wed., Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. at Herzl-Ner Tamid Conservative Congregation, 3700 E Mercer Island Way, Mercer Island.

A wealth of world Jewish records
The Jewish Genealogical Society of Washington State will host a lecture about Israeli archives that have developed large collections of historical and contemporary information about Jews from around the world, including Poland, Russia, Spain, and China. This presentation will offer general guidelines about contacting and accessing Israeli archives. The society will also share interesting case studies and data on how family mysteries have been solved using lesser-known Israeli archives. This program is appropriate for both newcomers and experienced genealogists. The cost is $5. 2007 World AIDS Day Luncheon Awards
Multifaith Works will honor Pat Benson, Ben Bridge Jewelers and Rabbi Anson Laytner at the fourth annual World AIDS Day Luncheon. Benson, a Multifaith Works client and volunteer will be awarded the HIV/AIDS Heroes Award. Ben Bridge Jewelers will be honored with the Corporate Leader Award, which recognizes the company’s event sponsorship, corporate philanthropy and commitment to helping better the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS. Rabbi Anson Laytner, now executive director of the Northwest chapter of the American Jewish Committee, will be honored with the Gwen Beighle Prestigious Committed Service Award for his 12 years of service as the executive eirector of Multifaith Works. The luncheon will be held on Fri., Nov. 30 at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center, 800 Convention Pl., Seattle. Scholar-in-residence
Dr. Nancy Berg, associate professor of Hebrew and comparative literature in arts and sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, will be Temple Beth Am’s scholar-in-residence for the weekend of December 7-9. While she is in town, she will give three lectures on the theme of “Israel at Sixty: Its Literature, Food, and Music.” Berg is the author of a number of books, including More and More Equal, which looks at the novels of Israeli writer Sami Michael. Her speaking engagements at Temple Beth Am are as follows: Fri., Dec. 7, 8 p.m.: Kabbalat Shabbat service followed by a lecture on Israeli literature at 60. Sat., Dec. 8, 10:30 a.m.: Saturday morning service, followed by lunch and talk, “Exile from Exile: The Literature of Arab Jews in Israel.” (RSVP required). Sun., Dec. 9, 10 a.m.: Participatory lecture, “The Experience Israel Project: Israeli Culture through Sound.” All events take place at Temple Beth Am, 2632 NE 80th St., Seattle. International Summer Science Institute
The International Summer Science Institute is looking for 20 highly motivated high school seniors to participate in ongoing scientific research at the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot, Israel. Next summer’s program runs from July 7–31 and gives students the opportunity to do research in the fields of biology, geology and climatology as well as a chance to take sightseeing trips throughout Israel.
