Global poverty discussion
Congregation Beth Shalom will host a conversation about global poverty, international aid, trade justice, and tikkun olam inspired by a delegation of synagogue members’ recent trip to El Salvador with the American Jewish World Service. Introduction to Judaism course
The Union for Reform Judaism-Pacific Northwest Council will sponsor a four-month course introducing students to varied perspectives on Judaism and exposure to Reform Jewish minds in the local community. Students are expected to attend class consistently, keep a journal and participate in a Shabbat dinner. Those studying toward conversion will also complete a final project and work with a Reform clergy mentor to further explore Judaism and provide a bridge to the Jewish community.
Tuition is $250 per individual or couple if already affiliated with a URJ congregation, or $300 per participant or couple not affiliated with a URJ congregation. Seattle Kollel golf tournament
The Seattle Kollel will host its 10th annual golf tournament at Foster Golf Links in Tukwila, followed by an awards banquet at Congregation Bikur Cholim-Machzikay Hadath. The cost is $100 per person or $40 for students and includes dinner for two, greens fees, golf carts, awards and prizes at every hole. $25 for each additional dinner guest not participating in the tournament. Compassionate Listening trip to Israel
The Compassionate Listening Project will lead a two-week trip to Israel and the Palestinian territories in the fall of 2008. Participants will take part in a Compassionate Listening training workshop in Jerusalem and then apply what they’ve learned in conversations with Palestinians and Israelis in Jerusalem, the Galilee and the West Bank. The trip runs from Oct. 28 to Nov. 9 and is limited to 20 people. The cost is $2,600 per person, not including airfare. For more information, visit www.compassionatelistening.org/trips.html.
Shabbat picnic
Temple B’nai Torah will host a picnic and outdoor Shabbat service featuring a full barbecue dinner and s’mores. The picnic will be held on the patio and grassy knoll behind the synagogue. Multi-shul barbecue bash
Bikur Cholim-Machzikay Hadath, Ezra Bessaroth, Sephardic Bikur Holim and Shevet Achim are co-hosting a barbecue for the entire Jewish community with food and games for both kids and adults. Jewish Community Day with the Mariners
Sun., Aug. 24 is Jewish Community Day at Safeco Field. The Mariners will play the Oakland Athletics. Discount tickets are available at www.mariners.com/Jewish. Field seats are $32 (normally $40) and view reserved seats are $17 (normally $20). Discount ticketholders can also pick up free Jewish Community Day t-shirts at tables located outside of sections 335 and 144. Israel advocacy workshop
The Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle, StandWithUs Northwest, and Herzl-Ner Tamid Conservative Congregation are partnering to lead a workshop for members of the Jewish community interested in learning how to talk about Israel in an informed, confident and non-confrontational manner.
