Reality check

By Jenna Sytman , , Mercer Island

Mr. Rothschild’s June 26 letter to the editor is a highly flawed argument that uses a concept most hold in contempt to further his personal disapproval of certain local institutions — crying “discrimination!” and suggesting the Federation address their budget deficit by eliminating funding for the Orthodox schools in Seattle. He claims these schools are “engaging in direct discrimination against other Jews.” His “discrimination” argument is faulty and fails the second you look at the list of organizations the Federation supports.
Using this definition of discrimination, let’s suggest the Federation abandon funding for BBYO, an organization that only allows teens to be members. This is discrimination against generations of Jews! What about the twenty, thirty or forty-somethings? Funding for Seattle Association for Jews with Disabilities should be eliminated since they discriminate against those without cognitive disabilities.
Obviously, these tongue-in-cheek
suggestions are ridiculous. Each of these groups serve important and valued segment of our diverse community. The Orthodox schools in Seattle are no different. They provide an important service to a segment of our Jewish community.
Discrimination is wrong. Quoting Mr. Rothschild, “it is time to do a reality check.” Don’t use the word “discrimination” to express your personal disapproval for funding the Orthodox schools in our community. Let’s save it for truly deplorable actions. As you say, “enough is enough.” The discrimination argument is not only flawed, it’s just plain silly.
