By David May, ,
Dearest Rabbi Bernie Fox:
Somehow I have faith this note will find you, though I am sending it to the wrong address.
I read with pride the news about the game that did not get played (“Ya gotta love ’em!” March 12). So rarely does the outcome of a “challenge” provide the opportunity for a defining moment in the lives of all those involved.
By your decision, you teach valuable lessons to the girls on the team, their parents, and to all of us who are so blessed to read the story. The lessons I learned are that one’s religion is more important than the game, more important than other earthly activities and desires.
To have the team report for the game and to show the respect and courtesy of shaking hands was another valuable lesson in humility, respect for the opposition and mostly respect for themselves.
Though the girls did not play the game, it is certain that they won, along with all the others that learned from this situation.
Sir, I am not a Jew but stories like this affirm my heartfelt respect for the Jewish community. You are indeed a great ambassador, teacher and a role model for all Americans.
