While most of us are aware that today is Yom Yerushalayim (Jerusalem Day), the Israeli holiday that commemorates the reunification of Jerusalem in the Six-Day War, most are unaware that another memorial holiday is also celebrated throughout Israel today: Memorial Day for Ethiopian Jews Who Died on the Way to Israel. The nationally recognized holiday was established by the Knesset Committee for Immigration, Absorption and the Diaspora in 2003, but was not officially celebrated until four years later with the unveiling of a memorial for fallen Ethiopian Jews on Jerusalem’s Mount Herzl.
