Benefit Gala for Mazon
A benefit gala for the national hunger organization MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger, will be held Sun., Dec. 9. Based out of Los Angeles, Mazon funds dozens of soup kitchens, food pantries, food banks, multi-service centers and other anti-hunger agencies throughout the United States and the world. The event is free, although donations to Mazon are encouraged. This event will take place Sun., Dec. 9 from 5-8 p.m. at Temple De Hirsch Sinai, 1520 E Union, Seattle.

Scholar in residence at Herzl-Ner Tamid
Rabbi Sidney Schwarz will be at Herzl-Ner Tamid as a scholar-in-residence from December 14-16. Rabbi Schwarz is the author of Judaism and Justice: The Jewish Passion to Repair the World and is the founder and president of PANIM: The Institute for Jewish Leadership and Values. While at Herzl-Ner Tamid, he will give two lectures. The first, “Judaism, Justice, and Holiness,” will take place Sat., Dec. 15 at 11:15 a.m., and the second, “Can Social Justice Save American Judaism’s Soul?” will be held on Sun., Dec. 16 at 11 a.m. Both talks will be at Herzl-Ner Tamid, 3700 E Mercer Island Way, Mercer Island. BabagaNewz postcard design contest
BabagaNewz, a classroom magazine for Jewish elementary and middle school students, is inviting kids from across the U.S. to participate in its “Big Draw” contest to design a postcard for the Israel Ministry of Tourism to use to invite people to visit the country during its 60th birthday year. Entrants are encouraged to think about what it means for Israel to be 60 years old and what might be the “big draw” of the country. A 6×9” card (vertical or horizontal) should be designed on plain white paper using crayon, ink, markers, paint, pastel, paper, paste-on items, cloth or any hand-applied media. Digital images, clip art, photographs and computer-generated entries are not allowed. The contest is open to students in grades 4–7. All postcards must be received by Fri., Feb. 15, 2008.
