Mission to Israel
The Pacific Northwest Region of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism is hosting a biennial mission to Israel for congregants of affiliated synagogues. The trip will run from February 17-26, 2009 and will include visits to Jerusalem, Haifa and Ein Gedi. The cost will be approximately $1,500 per person (airfare not included). Yom HaShoah community commemoration
Herzl-Ner Tamid Conservative Congregation, in conjunction with the Washington State Holocaust Resource Center, will host a community Yom HaShoah commemoration of the Holocaust on Sun., May 4. This event will include a candle lighting ceremony with the winners of the Jacob Friedman Holocaust Writing & Art Contest Award and a talk on “Moral Responsibility in Our Post-Holocaust World” by Dr. John K. Roth, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and founder of the Center for the Study of the Holocaust, Genocide and Human Rights at Claremont McKenna College. Polygamy and empire
Joshua Schreier, a professor of history at Vassar College, will give a lecture titled “Polygamy and Empire: Civilizing the Jewish Family in Colonial Algeria.” This is the fourth event in the Shaping of Sephardic Culture Colloquium Series at the University of Washington. Free and open to the public. At 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 30 at 317 Thomson Hall, University of Washington, Seattle.
NCJW scholarship opportunity
The National Council of Jewish Women’s Seattle Section’s scholarships for the 2008-2009 school year are now available. Both female and male Jewish students who currently attend any accredited college, university, technical school or job-retaining program in Washington State are eligible to apply. StandWithUs fellowship
Israel advocacy organization StandWithUs is now accepting applications from students at U.S. and Canadian college campuses for its SWU Emerson Fellowship for the 2008-2009 academic year. Selected fellows will be responsible for running educational programs about Israel on their respective campuses. To prepare for this task, they will attend conferences and training seminars where they will hear from experts on how to help clarify Israel’s image on campus, how to combat anti-Israel propaganda, and how to build coalitions and deal with the media. Fellows receive a stipend and are eligible to participate in the StandWithUs Taglit-birthright Israel trip or intern at the StandWithUs office in Israel in the summer of 2009.
