German-Jewish expert to speak
Dr. Hermann Simon, director of the New Synagogue Berlin-Centrum Judaicum Foundation, will be speaking on the subject of “Jewish Life in Berlin and Germany Today.” The talk, which is free and open to the public, will be held on Wed., Sept. 5 at 7:30 p.m.
Hermann Simon was born to a Holocaust survivor in Berlin, where he helped found the New Synagogue Berlin-Centrum Judaicum Foundation in 1988. From 1988 to 1995, he supervised the restoration of the historic building that houses the New Synagogue.
The event is co-sponsored by the Greater Seattle Chapter of the American Jewish Committee, the Consulate General of Germany and the Stroum Jewish Community Center. At SJCC, 3801 E Mercer Way, Mercer Island.
Kline Galland annual meeting
The Kline Galland Center and Affiliates will hold its 93rd annual meeting on Sun., Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. The formal meeting will be followed by a festive brunch. The theme for this year’s meeting is “Choices for Generations,” chosen to highlight the demand for expanded-care options for seniors.
Additionally, Doris Stiefel will be awarded the “Carolyn Danz Lifetime Achievement Award.” Dr. Stiefel was the first woman to graduate from the University of Washington School of Dentistry. An advocate for dental health care for the elderly, Dr. Stiefel served as associate professor with the Department of Oral Medicine at the UW and as the director of the school’s program of Dental Education in Care of People with Disabilities.
Larry Adatto, Michael Friend and Frank Lippman will be awarded the “Jennie Newberger Volunteer of the Year Award” for their continuing involvement in providing regular Shabbat morning services at the Kline Galland Home and the Summit at First Hill.
Mirealle Tugade will be awarded the “Barry Schneiderman Memorial Nursing Scholarship” award. The meeting takes place at the Kline Galland Home, 7500 Seward Park Ave. S, Seattle.
The shofar factory
Chabad of North Seattle is hosting a shofar-making workshop on Sun., Sept. 9 from 2–4 p.m. Participants will make their own shofars and enjoy holiday refreshments. “Over The Backyard Fence with Malkah Magadoff ,” the locally produced television program about current events in Israel, has a new time slot. You can now see the show on Wednesday mornings at 11 a.m. on Scan Public Access Television Channel 77. It also streams live on Scan’s Web site, www.scantv.org .
