Religion and violence
James K. Wellman, associate professor at the Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington and chairman of the department of comparative religion, presents a lecture on religion and violence. Wellman is the editor of Belief and Bloodshed, a study of religion and violence throughout history. Sun., July 12 at 11 a.m. at the Stroum JCC, 3801 E Mercer Way, Mercer Island.

American Red Cross classes
Congregation Bikur Cholim-Machzikay Hadath will host two classes taught by a representative from the American Red Cross on Sun., July 19. Courses included infant/child CPR and babysitting instruction for kids ages 11-15. Cost is $50 per participant for the babysitting course, $45 for CPR. Kosher snacks and drinks will be provided. Course certificates will be issued to students who satisfactorily complete these classes. Deadline to sign up is Fri., July 17. Garinim young family picnic
The entire community is invited to join Herzl-Ner Tamid Conservative Congregation for a family picnic. Entertainment will include music, dancing, crafts and games. Those attending are asked to bring a dairy or parve entrée or salad to share as well as a few canned food items to be donated to the Jewish Family Service food bank. Sun., July 19 at 4 p.m. at the Wittenberg Waterfront at Herzl-Ner Tamid, 3700 E Mercer Way, Mercer Island.

Space available in SJCS classes
The Seattle Jewish Community School still has a few openings in their kindergarten and Chai Fives classes for the 2009-10 school year. Chai Fives is a full-day program designed to meet the cognitive, developmental, social, and emotional needs of “young fives,” children turning five between June 1 and December 31, 2009. Chai Fives emphasizes learning through play, social development/integration, and an experiential approach that engages young students through all of their senses. Kidney donor sought
A member of Bet Alef Meditative Synagogue is in need of a kidney transplant and is looking for a donor. He is a 62-year-old retired psychologist with nine grandchildren.
