Technology for uncovering Jewish history
Avid amateur genealogist Sally Mizroch will demonstrate how to use online databases that have old-country census, tax, voter, passport, and other records to find out information about Jewish relatives who immigrated to the U.S. from Europe. This event is sponsored by the Jewish Genealogical Society of Washington State. Israel lecture series
The University of Washington’s Jewish Studies Program is sponsoring the third lecture in its New Interpretations of Israel series on Tuesday, March 11. Professor Patricia Woods from the University of Florida will speak on “The Women’s Movement and Religious/Secular Conflict in Israel.” The event is free and open to the public. Jewish Unity Live! 2008
Jewish Unity Live! 2008 is a celebration of Jewish learning sponsored by the Seattle Kollel. This event will include a talk by guest speaker Rabbi Mordechai Becher, musical entertainment and dinner. In preparation for the celebration, members of the Jewish community are invited to read a book of their choice on any Jewish subject, to be completed by March 12. Each participant’s name and book choice will be listed in an honor roll publication and at the Seattle Kollel. Tickets cost $25 per person. Takes place on Wednesday, March 12 at 7 p.m. at the Spirit of Washington Renton Event Center, 233 Burnett Ave. S, Renton. Stroum JCC Purim carnival
The Stroum Jewish Community Center is a hosting a Purim carnival, complete with games, prizes, a costume contest, cotton candy and slushies. The Jewish Day School of Metropolitan Seattle will host its annual auction and dinner at the Seattle Westin on Sunday, March 16. Finding your philanthropic passion
The Jewish Women’s Funding Network is hosting an event aimed at helping aspiring philanthropists decide what causes and organizations should get their attention. Guest speaker Janet Boguch, principal and owner of Non-Profit Works, will talk about making informed, diligent donations. Members and guests are welcome. Light refreshments will be served. Jewish Studies grants and scholarships
The University of Washington’s Jewish Studies program is offering four scholarships of $2,500 each to encourage outstanding undergraduate or graduate students who include coursework in Jewish Studies as a significant part of their course of study. The Jewish Studies program is also offering three travel grants of $1,500 each to students who plan to study abroad during the 2008-2009 school year. Volunteers wanted
The Washington State Holocaust Education Resource Center is seeking volunteers who can drive Holocaust survivors to speaking engagements at local area schools. Most of the driving is on the I-5 corridor and the presentations usually last one to two hours. Drivers typically have 10 to 14 days’ notice for most events.
