YLD bowling tournament
The Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle’s Young Leadership Division is hosting a bowling tournament as part of its 2008 Community Campaign to benefit local Jewish agencies. Community members are encouraged to start their own team or to sign up to bowl with an existing team. Cost is $45 and includes shoe rental, one drink ticket and a kosher-style buffet. Birthday bash for Israel
Temple Beth El in Tacoma will celebrate Israel’s 60th anniversary with a festival featuring live music, Israeli food, a photography exhibit, artists’ market, storytelling and more. Special guests will include U.S. Representatives Adam Smith and Norm Dicks, Pierce County Executive John Ladenburg, and Tacoma City Council member Mike Lonergan. The Jewish Federation’s annual meeting
The Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle will hold its annual meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Thurs., June 19 {corrected from June 9} at the Museum of History and Industry. The event will honor Robin Boehler and will include a light kosher buffet. Those interested in attending are encouraged to pre-register. 2008 Samuel and Althea Stroum Lecture Series

This year, the Samuel and Althea Stroum Lecture Series will bring Michael Walzer of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J. to the University of Washington for three lectures on the theme of Biblical politics. On Sun., May 11, he will speak on “The Meaning of Kingship.” On Tues., May 13, he will discuss “Prophecy and Social Criticism.” His final talk on Thurs., May 15 is called “Where Were the Elders?” These lectures are free and open to the public. Helping families through a narrow place
Jewish Family Service will host a workshop to explore the difficult questions that arise for a family when a parent is very sick with cancer or another serious illness. Facilitators Ellen Zahlis, M.N. and Mary Ellen Shands, R.N., M.N. from Cancer Lifeline will lead the discussion. A limited amount of babysitting is available by advance request.
