He could see the pilot’s face. That’s how close Arthur Rolfe was to the Japanese fighter pilot at Pearl Harbor in 1941. Many of his fellow shipmates were killed in the same attack. Rolfe told his story to a group of about 45 veterans at Seattle Hebrew Academy’s fifth annual salute to Jewish veterans. He said he would take the applause he received there “as a token of remembrance for those who didn’t make it.” All of the veterans present, who had fought in various wars throughout the United States’ recent history, enjoyed lunch together and then participated in an assembly in which they told the school’s students stories about their pasts.
