The Israel ambassador

By Robbie Ellenson, Special to JTNews

This past summer I embarked on a National Conference of Synagogue Youth high school trip called The Jewish Journey. The five-week-long trip of around 40 TJJ Ambassadors traveled all around the land of Israel. We hiked, biked, studied Judaism, learned about the land of Israel, did community service, and much more. The purpose of the trip was not only to create a closer connection to Judaism, but also to the land, and learn how to advocate for Israel on our high school or college campuses.
From day one, TJJ was an absolutely amazing experience. From riding camels to river rafting, to seminars, the activities were so much fun. Every day was a jam-packed adventure. Our exploration of the land made it come to life. We traveled from Eilat to the Golan, and everywhere in between.
Some of the highlights of the trip for me were water sports in Eilat, hiking in the Golan, and hearing fantastic guest speakers. However, my favorite part of the trip was running a four-day-long camp for kids from the Israeli town of Sderot. We got to set up and run our own summer camp. Working with the kids was totally great.
Not only did I get to do fun programming, but I also made friends from all over the U.S., Canada, and Israel, who I still talk to every day. The kids as well as the staff were amazing. Our trip leader, Rabbi Barry Goldfisher, was a fantastic tour guide, full of knowledge about the land of Israel.
However, my experience on TJJ goes far past just a summer experience. TJJ Ambassadors was a chance for me to learn about the history of my people and the beauty of my religion. I learned about Israeli current events and went to seminars that taught me how to advocate for Israel. I have taken what I have learned from the summer and use it in my daily life. TJJ Ambassadors has no doubt made me a better speaker, leader, and person.
