Bonnie Lipton, national president of Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, and Dr. Shmuel Penchas, former director general of Jerusalem’s Hadassah Hospital, will visit Seattle in August.
During their visit, they will be guests of honor at a garden party honoring past and current presidents of Seattle Chapter Hadassah and its groups. The garden party is on Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. at the garden of Irene Harvitz, 3225 134th Lane N.E. in Bellevue. Admission is $10 per person, $25 for patrons. There is no admission charge for prospective Hadassah members or current annual members who become Life members at this event. Local chef Emily Moore will present on the delights of cooking with flowers and herbs from the garden. Reservations are due by Aug. 15.
Bonnie Lipton has spent her life as a volunteer. A passionate Zionist, Lipton has made more than 100 trips to Israel. Lipton is a member of the presidium of the Zionist General Council of the World Zionist Organization. She currently serves on the board of the American Friends of Hebrew University and on the executive committee of AIPAC. She is a member of the board of governors of the Jewish Agency for Israel.
Shmuel Penchas studied medicine at the Hebrew University–Hadassah School of Medicine in Jerusalem, afterwards specializing in internal medicine and health administration. In 1981, Professor Penchas was appointed director general of the Hadassah Medical Organization, which he held until March 1, 1999. Professor Penchas’ efforts in the health care field have received international recognition. He was elected a foreign associate member of the Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences of the U.S.A. and to the Academy of Sciences of Romania. He received a Doctor of Philosophy Honoris Causa degree from the Carol Davila University in Bucharest, Romania; he was made an honorary member of the Romanian Academy of Medicine; and he also received a Doctor of Science Honoris Causa degree from the University of New England.
Founded in 1912, Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, is the largest women’s, largest Zionist and largest Jewish membership organization in the United States. In Israel, it supports medical care and research, education and youth institutions, and reforestation and parks projects. In the U.S., Hadassah promotes health education, social action and advocacy, volunteerism, Jewish education and research, Young Judaea and connections with Israel.
