Doug Rosen will be honored with the Samuel & Althea Stroum Spirit of Inspiration award at the Stroum Jewish Community Center’s annual fund-raising dinner and auction, Night & Day for the “J,” on June 23.
Rosen received a B.S. degree from the University of Washington and an M.B.A. from Harvard. He is currently the executive vice president of Alco Investment Company, a Seattle-based family-owned business. Alco operates two businesses in Seattle, Alaskan Copper & Brass Company and Alaskan Copper Works, and is also in the real estate and investment businesses.
Rosen was on the board and executive committee of the JCC for many years, and served as president from 1994 to 1996. He and his wife, Deborah, supported the center during its 1982 capital campaign and the Mercer Island facility’s fitness center renovation in 1998. He has been active in recent capital fund-raising efforts related to the JCC’s potential expansion, which may involve a campus plan that supports several Jewish organizations.
The Rosens have been members of the JCC since the late ‘70s, and their three children, Jonathan, Barbara, and Adam, all went through the center’s preschool program and have used the facility for swimming, basketball and soccer, as well as the Community High School of Jewish Studies.
Rosen has also served on the board of The Empty Space Theater and the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle, and is currently chair of the Investment Committee and a board member of the Kline Galland Home.
The Samuel & Althea Stroum Spirit of Inspiration Award was created to recognize and honor individuals whose dedication, leadership and commitment to the JCC sets a standard of philanthropy for generations to come.
It was named in honor of the late philanthropist and Jewish community supporter Samuel Stroum, who died in March 2001, and his wife, Althea. Paul Etsekson, current board president of the JCC, commented, “The board felt strongly that Doug should be the first-time recipient of this prestigious award. His past and current leadership and dedication to the ‘J’ have been important. Doug stepped up tirelessly, selflessly and without being asked in the last year and took a lead role in helping to solve the many complicated issues facing the ‘J’ and directed us towards a stable solution.”
The community is invited to attend the Night & Day for the “J” fund-raiser on June 23 and 24, including the Summer Solstice Dinner & Auction on the evening of June 23, and the Morris J. Alhadeff Memorial Golf Tournament and Joanie Alhadeff Bridge and Mah Jongg Challenge on June 24. Rosen will be honored at the Summer Solstice evening event. For information, call 206-232-7115.
