Jewish Family Service to honor Executive Director Ken Weinberg

By , Special to JTNews

Jewish Family Service will honor its Executive Director, Ken Weinberg, for

his 25 year tenure with the agency. Originally from New York, Weinberg began

his career at Jewish Family Service as an intern while pursuing a Masters in

Social Work from the University of Washington. After holding a number of

positions within the agency, he became its Executive Director in 1988.

“Ken is widely regarded by his colleagues across the country as being one of

the most effective and successful agency directors within the Jewish Family

and Children’s Service system,” commented AJFCA Executive Vice President Bert

Goldberg.

A tribute journal honoring Weinberg is currently in progress, and a special

tribute program will be the centerpiece of the agency’s annual benefit Gala

on Monday, June 5, 2000 at Benaroya Hall.

“We wanted to create a unique and permanent tribute to Ken; something that

would reflect his longstanding contribution to our community,” said Jeannie

Pollart, Tribute Journal Committee Chair. “We found the perfect opportunity

in our partnership with the Judaic artist David Moss, who is allowing us to

bind our tribute pages into his exquisite Passover Haggadah.”

Each copy of the special edition printing of the Haggadah will be hand signed

by the artist. Facsimiles of Moss’ original Haggadah are held in the

collections of the British Museum, the Getty Museum, the rare book rooms of

Princeton, Yale and Harvard and at the White House. The deadline for

submitting tributes for the journal is Feb. 11, 2000.

The agency’s June 5th Gala will feature a kosher gourmet dinner in the Samuel

and Althea Stroum Grand Lobby at Benaroya Hall, followed by the tribute

program and a performance by noted jazz vocalist Diane Schuur in the intimate

Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall. Seating is limited to 500 guests.

“We are so looking forward to recognizing Ken for his outstanding commitment

to the needs of each and every person in our community,” agreed Gala

Co-Chairs Irv and Laura Karl. “We’re planning a most meaningful and

entertaining evening—a real celebration.
