Chabad-Lubavitch’s Jewish Learning Initiative presents a course allowing students to explore the Talmud’s thinking about civil law by presenting them with real cases brought before the court system of Jewish law and to compare Talmudic analysis with the contemporary approach taken in United States courts. Topics include business ethics, property rights, and employment practices. Each lesson provides an opportunity to question, discuss, and argue, based on principle and precedent. This course has been approved for nine general credits by the Washington Bar. Classes start next week. Genealogy software: Today and tomorrow
The Jewish Genealogical Society of Washington State presents a talk by Seattle Genealogical Society Computer Interest Group co-chair Dawn Bingaman about some of the genealogy software packages on the market today. “The Girl in the Tree: Peripheral Performers of Turkish Synagogue Music”
Dr. Maureen Jackson, a Jewish Studies fellow at the University of Washington, shares her exploration of Turkish women who have become well-versed in an historical synagogue repertoire traditionally performed by men. Through memoirs and oral histories, this talk will explore the gendered dichotomies of male and female roles in Sephardic music scholarship. “Beyond Anne Frank: Hidden Children and Postwar Families in Holland”
Diane L. Wolf, a professor of sociology and director of the Jewish Studies Program at UC Davis, lectures on what happened to Jewish children and their families who had been hidden by gentiles during the Holocaust once WWII came to an end. Women’s Learning Circle Shabbaton
Jewish women throughout the Seattle area are invited to take part in a weekend Shabbaton at the Watertown Hotel featuring lectures and workshops by local educators and guest speaker Shimona Tzikurnik, an international lecturer for Chabad.
