An obligation to protect

My Name Is Rachel Corrie presents a one-sided, simplistic view of a very complex issue. Rachel Corrie’s death was a tragic accident that occurred when an Israeli bulldozer was engaged in an antiterrorist operation, after she was placed in harm’s way by the International Solidarity Movement.
Israel Defense Forces make extraordinary efforts to avoid civilian casualties even when engaged in antiterrorist activity. By contrast, Hamas, which controls the Palestinian Authority, targets Israeli civilians in suicide bombings and other terrorist activities.
The suffering of Palestinians is unfortunate. So much of the economic decline and deprivations they endure are due to necessary security measures that Israel must undertake to prevent attacks against Israel. The State of Israel has a right and obligation to protect its citizens.
